Liepāja 2027

In 2026, the association “New Theatre Institute of Latvia” begins an important phase of regional and international collaboration through the development of two large-scale projects in Karosta, which will become a significant part of the Liepāja – European Capital of Culture 2027 programme “(un)rest.” Publicly announced in February, the programme outlines a broad and diverse spectrum of cultural events — from music and contemporary art to community participation initiatives throughout Liepāja and its surrounding areas.

One of the projects, “AKA – SPRING 2027,” is being developed by the Flemish artist Jozef Wouters together with the collective Decoratelier. In collaboration with the children and young people of Karosta, they will create a unique environmental installation — a structure that will serve as a space for play, gathering, and interaction, freely accessible to all residents and visitors of Karosta.

Meanwhile, in the project “Karosta Children’s Symphony: A Young Person’s Guide to Life,” the British artist duo Action Hero will focus on musical participation and explore the question: who can play in an orchestra? The project is based on the idea of a symphonic work created by the children and young people of Karosta themselves, reflecting their experiences, emotions, and everyday lives.
