The Last “Baltic Takeover” Assembly in Helsinki
In 2023 New Theatre Insitute of Latvia joins forces with Kanuti Gildi Saal (EE) and Lithuanian Dance Information Centre (LT) to create a new festival in Helsinki, “Baltic Takeover” 7-11 June 2023.
In the lead up to the festival the Baltic Take Over artists and curators have been meeting in each other’s countries to exchange ideas, gather energy and carve friendships. The final assembly took place from 16-20 November in Helsinki in conjunction with the Baltic Circle Festival. This gathering was attended by 15 artists and curators from all Baltic countries including artistic director of NTIL Bek Berger and producer Ieva Briede, Inta Balode and Ginta Grūbe from “Laukku“, Platons Buravickis from association “Sansusi” and Klāvs Mellis from “Kvadrifrons“.
During five intensive days, artists visited the Baltic Takeover festival local partners – Kiasma / URB, Annantalo, Viirus Theatre, Madhouse Helsinki.
In addition to our confirmed partners we visted the wider artistic community in Helsinki with tours of Zodiak, Arts Management Helsinki, Dance House Helsinki, Dance Information Centre Helsinki and Wauhaus studio. Artists were also given a chance to attend International theatre festival Baltic Circle, to see such performances as association Rampa “Inviting precarious perspectives”, Henriikka Himma & working group “I was living in a strange place”, as well as Biret & Gáddjá Haarla Pieski performance “Starting from Staring – Čalmmiid Čađa”. In addition to visiting the venues and the festival, artists and curators held joint meetings to discuss various details related to the upcoming festival.
So far, the Baltic partners have organized four assemblies in the context of each partner’s festival. Each meeting was curated and produced by the host partner, including lectures, workshops, talks with festival artists and site visits.
