MagiC Carpets residency in Ķengarags by artists Modesta Jakeliūnaite and Elīna Matvejeva

Theatre artist Modesta Jakeliūnaite (Lithuania) and video artist Elīna Matvejeva (Latvia) worked in the neighbourhood of Ķengarags this summer with seniors from the day centre “Ķengarags” and young people from the children and youth centre “Daugmale”.

During the month, a public information picnic was organised to reach out to local young people, as well as activities for a specific group of young people and seniors.

During the sessions, the artists collected stories about places in the Ķengarags neighbourhood that were important to the participants and later captured them in photographs. Participants shared stories about the places they remembered the most, because of a special event, where they met someone close to them, experienced something unexpected or spent the most time, etc.

Stories and pictures were combined into a poetic map of Kengarags, using the technique of cyanthippe to transfer pictures, texts, plants and other significant objects onto the fabric for the stories and people they contain. The map was presented and updated with new stories on 18 August at a performative picnic at the youth centre “Kaņieris”.
