7th year of the platforms’ “Magic Carpets” residencies

As part of the residency programme of the international platform Magic Carpets, the New Theatre Institute of Latvia  this year is implementing residencies involving three artists and two communities.

Visual and theatre artist Max Fernandes Oliveira (Portugal) and dramaturge Elza Marta Ruža (Latvia) will collaborate with the residents of Seda, a town in Valmiera country. The aim of the residency is to get to know the inhabitants of Seda and collectively find themes of interest, current stories through which to create a new performing art work to be presented at the Valmiera Summer Theatre Festival from 2 to 4 August.

For the third year, LJTI will also collaborate with the residents of Ķengarags neighbourhood in Riga. This year, the artist in residence will be theatre director Reinis Boters. This year’s aim is to celebrate the encounters of the past years, new friendships, discoveries and to imagine the future together. The collectively created celebration will take place at the International Contemporary Theatre Festival “Homo Novus”.

“MagiC Carpets” is a platform uniting 21 European cultural organisations that create opportunities for emerging artists to embark on journeys to unknown lands and to create, together with local artists and local communities, new works that highlight local specificities and compensate for the shortage of story-telling existing in the modern society by enhancing cultural accessibility, cultural activism and participation.
“Magic Carpets” platform and artists’ residencies are co-funded by the EU’s Creative Europe programme.
