Claire Cunningham’s lecture-performance “4 Legs Good”

The New Theatre Institute of Latvia invites everyone interested in Claire Cunningham’s public lecture/performance “4 Legs Good” on November 9, 18:00 at the Dirty Deal Teatro, Talsu iela 1, in which she talks about the topic of representation of disability on stage.

Claire Cunningham is visiting Riga to run a three-day master class for people with functional disabilities with the aim of promoting their involvement in the performing arts. On the final day of the masterclass, the artist will share her practice, the study of crutches and how they shape her work. She explores how the crutches relate to her body and, more broadly, how they connect her to the world and other people.

The venue is accessible to people with mobility impairments. The event will be held in English, a sign language interpreter will be provided in Latvian. Entrance to the event is free, but the number of places is limited, so please register by writing to berzina.liba@gmail.com or calling 28649014.

Claire Cunningham is a performer and creator of multi-disciplinary performance based in Glasgow, Scotland. A recent Factory Artist with Tanzhaus NRW Düsseldorf, Germany she is also an Affiliate Artist with The Place, London. One of the UK’s most acclaimed and internationally renowned disabled artists, Cunningham’s work is often rooted in the study and use/misuse of her crutches and the exploration of the potential of her own specific physicality with a conscious rejection of traditional dance techniques (developed for non-disabled bodies). This runs alongside a deep interest in the lived experience of disability and its implications not only as a choreographer but also in terms of societal notions of knowledge, value, connection and interdependence. A self-identifying disabled artist, Cunningham’s work combines multiple art forms and ranges from the intimate solo show ME (Mobile/Evolution) (2009), to the large ensemble work  12  made for Candoco Dance Company.
