Can't Make Me
, 2003

The festival will end on the 5th of October with the concert of internationally known Hungarian band Besh o droM. It is a new group from Eastern Europe, which combines with professionalism and taste Hungarian, Balkan and, of course, Gypsy music with modern rhythms, jazz, electronic music, dancefloor, thus making folk music topical in various social groups. However, Besh o droM is not a group, frozen in the "Balkan" category. Its musical base is formed by fragments from Jewish, Afghan, Egyptian, Lebanese, Armenian music. The music of various, conflicting nations live peacefully side by side in the recording of the group. It is both playful and serious, cheerful and moving, acoustic and electronic, authentic and urbanised. The group is called the future wedding orchestra, which brings the traditional music on the 21st century dance floors. The group was founded in 1999 in Budapest. Alongside superb masters of percussion and wind instruments, the most demanded Hungarian hiphop DJ features band's recordings. In 2001 Besh o droM performed together with such Balkan music stars as Boban Markovich (Serbia) and Taraf de Haiduks (Romania). The music played by Besh o droM slightly reminds of Macedonian Gypsy orchestra Kochani that visited Riga and was loved by the audience, but in a more contemporary version.

Press reviews

"Bold, wide-ranging and hugely fun music from Eastern Europe (...) In short this album is a confident, virtuoso and hugely enjoyable feast of music drawn from diverse sources but all clearly stamped with Besh o droM's marker - their name is a Gypsy idiom for "Go your own way". Well worth catching live, I suspect."

Simon Broughton Songlines: the World Music Magazine, 17/2003

"I warmly recommend Besh o droM for daily usage. No risk of overdosing."

Andrash Barabass, writer

"Joyful, stylish Budapest Gypsy music with a touch of jazz and Dj's mixes. Besh o droM's going to have a gig in Riga in October - during the Contemporary Theatre Festival HOMO NOVUS. Till that - enjoy the latest recording "Can't make me" of these charming musicians, who are able to wake you up in the mornings and who won't let you asleep in the evenings. All you have to do is to push the play!"

Ainars Mielavs, magazine Santa, 06.2003.
