Latvian Showcase: N.Gogol "Inspector General"

One of the best last season's productions. The reinterpretation of classics is staged in the atmosphere of the Soviet era of 1970th. Action takes place in a canteen or kitchen where exist a bunch of fat people and three fat hens. The production is overcrowded with quotations and references of the social reality of 70th - starting with dirty walls, aluminium plates and specific smells characteristic only for the Soviet canteens up to culture references leading back to famous Meierhold's production and respective usage film and literature images.

It's essential to stress that the performance isn't about weirdies. It is about the humans like us. Each of them is having his/her own dream and longings. It could be assert that "The Government Inspector" is a performance about human longings.

"The plot of The Government Inspector make us think about the play as satire; and most possibly this approach is delusive. Our performance is a tentative to get closer to the solution of its mystery. Gogol is like a dream and one can stay in it for ever, if it hasn't happen jet with us." (director Alvis Hermanis)

Summarising the reading of the characters and the subject matter of the play one can use the words from classics: "through laughter they happily parted with their history".

Director and set designer - Alvis Hermanis

Alvis Hermanis still belongs to the generation of the new directors. This characterisation is more determined by his approach to theatre than by his age.
His performances are very different aesthetically, but all of them are characterised by perfect sense of form, stile and epoch. A. Hermanis always fascinates an audience with unpredictability of his projects. His theatre is a quest for new experience and new limits of reality, involving audio and visual arts. The previous theatre fall A.Hermanis was announced the best stage director in Latvia.
Since 1997 - 1999 the director and artistic director of New Riga Theatre. Up to now artistic director.

The New Riga Theatre is a professional repertory theatre that provides innovative art corresponding to the requirements of the independent thinking contemporary spectator both in its content and form. The artistic principles of the NRT are simple: high professional, ethic and aesthetic quality. This is an intelligent and attractive repertory of high quality focussed on a modern, educated and socially active audience.
In this era of mass, production and stress, the NRT wants to affirm humanism, vitality and emotions and search for the way back to harmony and simplicity!

The New Riga Theatre was established in August 1992 as a non-profit making state organisation with an active board of directors and permanent staff of actors. The house in Lacplesa Street 25 was purpose built as a theatre in 1901. It housed the second Latvian professional theatre. From the time of its foundation, this theatre took an opposing stand to the Academic style and started seeking for new ways of expression. It became the main trend for all the theatres situated in this building and it continues today.

The artistic program of the New Riga Theatre is based on the aesthetic and artistic quality of the productions. The NRT produces professional thought provoking theatre in Latvia. Its repertoire is formed by:

- Modern interpretations of classics, e.g.: A.Pushkin's "Queen of Spades" , Gogol's "The Inspector" (director Alvis Hermanis), J.W.Goethe's "Werther" (director Peteris Krilovs), Dostojevski's "Idiot" (director Viesturs Kairiss) A. Schnitzler "Rondo" after "Der Reigen" (director Banuta Rubess), etc;
- A new approach to the Latvian drama, e.g. R.Blaumanis's "Tailors' Days in Silmači" M.Zalite "Margareta", or I.Abele "The Dark Deer" (all directed by Viesturs Kairiss)
- Staging of contemporary foreign plays, e.g. T.Stoppard's "Arcadia", J.Reza's "Art", J. Grischkowets' "The City" (directed by Alvis Hermanis), K.Cherchill "The Top Girls"(director Banuta Rubess).
