Theatre Expanded



In February 2016 the New Theatre Institute of Latvia together with the Estonian theatre centre Vaba Lava, the Latvian Academy of Culture and with the support from The ERAF Central Baltic Programme 2014-2020, launches a new training programme for students and young professionals active in the performing arts management.

The programme consists of five 2 day long training sessions with curators, producers and dramaturgs of several leading European performing arts festivals and venues. Additionally, two of the participants will have the opportunity to work for two weeks as stagiers at Vaba Lava in Tallinn in May 2016 and at the International Festival of Contemporary Theatre Homo Novus in Riga in September 2016, as well as attend several lectures about practical arts project management in Tallinn.

The programme aims to expand the understanding and professional knowledge of arts management students and young professionals about the current developments in the contemporary performing arts field and the connection to social and political context.

The first workshop on February 5 and 6 was run by Frie Leysen (BE), a seminal festival director and curator in contemporary performing arts world, the founder of deSingel in Antwerp and Kunstenfestivaldesarts in Brussels, curator of Theater der Welt (2008-2010), artistic director of Foreign Affairs festival in Berlin (2010-2012) and most recently Head of Drama Department at Wiener Festwochen (2013-2014). 

The next workshop in February 23 and 24 will be moderated by Helen Cole (UK), the artistic and executive director of In Between Time in Bristol where in 2001 she also founded and runs one of the leading performing and live arts festivals in UK, In Between Time Festival.

Theatre Expanded programme participants from Latvia and Estonia are Māra Pāvula, Melānija Dubra, Anna Zagorska, Anna Sīle, Evija Sedola, Katrīna Dūka, Katrīna Daugule, Ina Ločmele, Tālivaldis Tālis Āboliņš, Ieva Cīrule, Madara Enzele, Lauma Kaudzīte, Madara Sokolova, Kristīne Liniņa, Daiga Rutka, Lāsma Bērtule, Terēze Šulca, Dārta Ceriņa, Patrīcija Kolāte, Tiiu Tamm, Grete Nellis.

Theater Expanded is supported by The Central Baltic Programme 2014-2020, a funding programme financing cross-border cooperation projects in the central Baltic Sea region.
