Urban Heat 2015 – 2018

Urban Heat is a project developed by the Festivals in Transition (FIT) network of 13 international festival partners, supported by Creative Europe, which enables artists to engage with the invisible communities within cities. The project started with an academy in Munich  (October 28 – November 1, 2015) and will last until 2018.

Urban Heat participants are 22 artists from Finland, Estonia, Slovenia, Belgium, Iceland, Brazil, France, UK, Italy, The Netherlands, Germany, Jordan, Portugal, Lebanon and Latvia working in performance, theatre, dance and interdisciplinary who are open to re-imagine and experiment with the role of arts in the development of contemporary cities (or) who are open to re-imagine how art could evoke change and support sustainability in the cities.

The programme consists of 5 Urban Labs:

April 2016 in Cairo – theme “Choreography, performance and the public”,
June 2016 in Lisabon  – theme “Participation, faith and communities”,
July 2016 in Dro  – theme “Big Data and Activism”,
September 2016 in London  – theme “‘Tech City Lab’ supporting artists to respond to the Digital Shift”,
November 2016 in Maribor – theme “Socio – Economic Power Structures”.

Subsequent to these Urban Labs each FIT partner will commission at least one participating artist to create a new work based on the themes of the programme. These works will engage a specific audience or community within each of the festival’s own locations and will be developed through close collaboration between the artists and FIT partner.
