Magic Carpets residencies in Latvia and Romania
From May until August NTIL together with partners from the international platform Magic Carpets organizes artist residencies in Latvian cities Riga and Cēsis, and Romanian town Slon. The first residency will be held on May 16-28 in Riga and June 19-29 in Cēsis, inviting Romanian artist Odeta Catana to join the creative team of the ‘almost documentary’ performance “A Country of Grandmas”, to share her knowledge and experience and create a documentary photo story about the aging, the role of grandmothers in the 21’st century, the relationship between seniors and young people. The result of the residency will be shown on June 29 at the festival “Lampa” in Cēsis.
Odeta is a documentary photographer, living and working in Berlin, Germany. Her projects reflect a preoccupation upon the human condition and often take a social documentary approach. Through photography she has documented massive Romanian migration to other European countries, mentally disabled people in Romanian institutions, communities of Roma people who have moved to Berlin and other social phenomena. Odeta has an academic background in the history of arts, cultural and social anthropology. She has trained herself as a professional documentary photographer at the University of Wales, Newport, UK.
The second residency organised by Meta Cultural Foundation in Slon from July 10 till August 7, will host Latvian theatre and film director Marta Elīna Martinsone. Marta has directed performances at Dirty Deal Teatro and theatre Ģertrūdes ielas teātris and has worked as an assistant director at the New Riga Theatre. In 2018 the graduation film of Marta Elīna Martinsone “Viesturs Kairišs comes out of the woods” received the national film award “Lielais Kristaps” as the best student film. She has worked on recently released fiction films “Together” and “1906”. During her residency in Slon Marta together with the local community will analyse the conflicts of the citizens of Ancient Rome, searching for parallels with nowadays and trying to revive the antique culture of debate.
The third residency will be held in Riga in August with its artistic outcome presented at Homo Novus festival on 5-13 September.
Magic Carpets platform consists of 13 organisations from Kaunas, Berlin, Folkestone, Rome, Prague, Bucharest, Limerick, Tbilisi, Porto, Zagreb, Novi Sad, Innsbruck and Riga and its goal is to foster the development and mobility of emerging artists by providing residency opportunities. The emerging artists in residencies have the chance to collaborate with local communities and artists and to work in the field of socially engaged and responsible art creating new multi-discipline artworks related to current issues of global nomadism, displacement and encountering otherness.
