Dramaturgy in the Age of the Performative / Riga, June 16-17

How are we to understand the role of dramaturgy within the field of choreography, dance and performance–making when increasingly these disciplines are drawn upon not only to make dances and scripts – but equally books, festivals, albums, websites, full-feature length films, acts of resistance? What new models of dramaturgical thinking are required to address the needs of artists busy with choreography and performance-making today that are not strictly operating as experts in their own field but rather operating as radical dilettantes in the fields of others?

In this workshop the British dramaturg, curator and lecturer Alexander Roberts will invite participants to think collectively through these questions and engage with a range of models that potentially offer direction.

Alexander Roberts has a background in punk and hardcore bands, and became interested in dance and choreography through Live Art and Performance Art practices. Today Alexander is a curator and programmer in Reykjavik– currently working as co-director of Reykjavík Dance Festival and Programme Director for the Masters in Performance Making at the Iceland Academy of the Arts. Alexander is also a dramaturg who works closely in this capacity with several Icelandic artsists Ásrún Magnúsdóttir, Dance for Me Company and Katrín Gunnarsdóttir – among others. Alexander has a double masters in International Performance Research from the Uni. of Warwick and Uni. of Amsterdam.

The workshop will be organised into two parts. Stage #1 will take time to lay a contextual foundation on the history of dramaturgy in dance. On Stage #2  we will look to the principles and models for dramaturgical thinking derived from – for example – the writing of Jacques Ranciere, Claire Bishop and Andre Lepecki; the work of Ant Hampton and Christophe Meierhans via their Automatic Workshop; as well as the DasArts Feedback model – and apply them to specific art works.

There is no participation fee, but the participants will be asked to attend both workshop days.

The workshop is open to dance and theatre makers (choreographers, directors, dramaturgs), no age restrictions.
Please apply by sending a short biography and motivation for this workshop to laura@theatre.lv by June 10.

Organized by the New Theatre Institute of Latvia as part of [DNA] project. Co-funded by the Creative Europe programme by the European Union, State Culture Capital Foundation and Riga City Council.
